The Nubian kingdom that conquered Egypt and ruled as the 25th Dynasty. Built more pyramids than Egypt. The Meroe pyramids still stand in Sudan.
Indigenous West African writing system from Nigeria/Cameroon. Used by the Ekpe society. Pottery with Nsibidi dates to the 6th-11th century. Inspired Wakanda's writing in Black Panther.
One of the oldest continuously used writing systems in the world. 231 characters. Still used today for Amharic and Tigrinya. The Ethiopian Bible predates the European Bible.
The Kingdom of Kush's own alphabet, developed independently from Egyptian hieroglyphs. Still not fully deciphered — scholars are still working on it.
Ancient Berber/Tuareg writing found in rock paintings across the Sahara. Still used today by Tuareg people. Now taught in schools in Morocco and Algeria.
"Black Wall Street" destroyed. 300+ killed, 35 blocks burned, 10,000 homeless. The first aerial bombing of an American city — by Americans on Americans. Photos exist. Survivors testified.
The U.S. government let 399 Black men suffer and die from syphilis for 40 years — even after penicillin was available. Never treated. Never told. Government apologized in 1997.
12.5 million Africans kidnapped. 2 million died in the Middle Passage. Ship manifests, insurance records, and port documents all exist.
The only successful coup d'état in American history. White supremacists overthrew the elected Black government in Wilmington, NC. Killed 60-300 people. Newspapers at the time reported it.
Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a Black neighborhood from a helicopter. 11 people killed (including 5 children). 65 homes destroyed. Caught on video.
The federal government literally drew red lines on maps around Black neighborhoods and made it illegal to give mortgages there. The original maps still exist.
Her cells (HeLa) were taken without consent and used in medical research for 70+ years. Led to polio vaccine, cancer research, COVID vaccines. Family never compensated until 2023.
Drew the patent for Alexander Graham Bell's telephone. Made Edison's light bulb actually work by inventing the carbon filament. His patents are in the U.S. Patent Office.
Invented the blood bank system. Ran the first large-scale blood bank. Resigned in protest when the military segregated blood by race.
First Black U.S. Deputy Marshal west of the Mississippi. Arrested 3,000 felons. Never shot first, never wounded. Historians believe he inspired the Lone Ranger.
